Lake Natron Day Trip
Lake Natron: A Unique Natural Wonder at the Foot of Ol’ Doinyo Lengai
Lake Natron lies on the border of Tanzania and Kenya, nestled at the base of Ol’ Doinyo Lengai, the sacred mountain of the Maasai. This striking lake, situated in the northern Ngorongoro region, is known for its rich red hues that change with the time of day. The lake is primarily fed by the Ewaso Nyiro River from Kenya and mineral-rich hot springs, with water temperatures rising to 40°C under the blazing sun.
What sets Lake Natron apart is its extreme alkalinity, with a pH of 10.5—almost as caustic as ammonia. The lake’s high salinity, caused by evaporation leaving behind minerals, fosters the growth of pigmented bacteria that lend the water its vivid red coloration. Despite being only three meters deep, the lake stretches up to 60 kilometers long and 20 kilometers wide, attracting thousands of flamingos that thrive in this harsh environment.
Lake Natron is also infamous for its eerie phenomenon of mummified birds. The reflective surface often confuses migrating birds, causing them to crash and become preserved by the sodium carbonate-rich waters. During the dry season, receding waters reveal the preserved remains, creating a haunting yet fascinating landscape.
Additional Activities Around Lake Natron:
- Ngare Sero Waterfalls Hike: Explore lush greenery and cool off in the refreshing cascades.
- Ol’ Doinyo Lengai Volcano Trek: Climb this active volcano for unparalleled views and the thrill of experiencing Maasai culture’s sacred site.
